PART 3: The elite crowd stood frozen, their collective breath held as the echo of the heavy front doors sealing Vanessa’s fate died away.

The elite crowd stood frozen, their collective breath held as the echo of the heavy front doors sealing Vanessa’s fate died away. Ethan’s arms remained wrapped around Clara and Noah, his chest heaving against hers, the scent of the cheap lavender soap she had used to disguise herself blending with the familiar, heartbreaking memory of her skin.

But the warmth of the embrace was suddenly shattered.

From the top of the grand sweeping staircase, a slow, mocking clap echoed down into the hall.

"How touching," a deep, gravelly voice sneered. "A fairytale reunion right out of a cheap novel."

Clara’s body went completely rigid in Ethan’s arms. Her fingers dug frantically into the fabric of Ethan’s jacket, her breath catching in a choked gasp of pure terror as Noah whimpered, burying his face in her neck.

Ethan felt the instantaneous shift in her muscles and turned his head, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. Standing on the landing, flanked by two burly men in dark suits, was Arthur Sterling—Vanessa’s father, and the architect of the nightmare that had stolen two years of their lives.

"Sterling," Ethan growled, the word vibrating with a feral, murderous rage. He stepped fully in front of Clara and Noah, his massive frame shielding them like a wall of solid iron.

"You didn't honestly think I'd let a few incompetent security guards ruin a multi-billion-dollar merger, did you, Ethan?" Arthur said, stepping down the stairs with a sickeningly calm confidence. His expensive Italian shoes clicked against the marble, a rhythmic, predatory sound that made Clara flinch. "My daughter may be weak, but I am not. You will sign the contract tonight, or I will ensure that the tragic car crash from two years ago finally finishes the job."

One of Arthur’s hired men reached into his jacket, the unmistakable silhouette of a firearm pressing against the fabric.

The guests erupted into a blind panic, shoving past one another to flee through the side exits, their glittering gowns and tailored tuxedos blurring into a chaotic stampede. Within moments, the grand hall was empty of onlookers, leaving only the fractured family, a desperate villain, and the heavy, metallic smell of impending violence.

Ethan didn't flinch at the threat. Instead, a terrifying, humorless smile touched his lips. "You think you can threaten my family in my own house, Arthur? You think your paid thugs can stop what's coming for you?"

"I know they can," Arthur snapped, his composure finally cracking, revealing the desperate, cornered rat underneath. He signaled his men. "Grab the boy. We leave through the back."

The two men lunged down the remaining steps.

Ethan didn't wait for them to reach the bottom. With the explosive speed of a man who had nothing left to lose, he met the first man at the base of the stairs. He threw a brutal, short-arc right hook that connected squarely with the man's jaw, a sickening crack echoing through the hall as the thug went completely limp, crashing backward into the banister.

The second man drew his weapon, aiming it directly at Ethan’s chest.

"No!" Clara shrieked.

Driven by raw, maternal instinct, Clara grabbed a heavy, solid silver candelabra from the nearby banquet table. Before the gunman could pull the trigger, she swung it with all her might, striking the man across the wrist. The gun clattered away across the slick marble floor, and Ethan followed through instantly, driving his knee into the man's midsection and throwing him to the ground, pinning him under his weight until the man stopped struggling.

Arthur backed up a step, his face draining of all color as he realized his protection was gone. He turned to flee back up the stairs, but Ethan was already there, bounding up the steps two at a time, his hand gripping Arthur’s expensive collar and slamming him hard against the mahogany railing.

"Two years," Ethan hissed, his voice dropping to a whisper that was colder than death. His fingers tightened around Arthur's throat, lifting the older man slightly off his feet. "You kept my wife in a cage. You made my son believe his mother was a ghost. You made me wish I was dead every single day."

"Ethan... please..." Arthur choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Ethan's iron grip, his eyes bulging with terror. "The police... they'll ruin us both..."
