PART 3: The engine of the SUV purred to a sudden, jarring halt. Marcus’s hand froze on the ignition key, the promise he had just uttered still hanging in the warm air of the cabin.

The engine of the SUV purred to a sudden, jarring halt. Marcus’s hand froze on the ignition key, the promise he had just uttered still hanging in the warm air of the cabin.

Through the tinted windshield, the iron security gates of the estate remained firmly shut, refusing to part. Instead, a sleek, silver sedan slid into the driveway, blocking their exit entirely and forcing Marcus to slam his foot onto the brake.

Lily whimpered, her small fingers clutching the edge of the soft blanket, her eyes darting from the silver car back to the imposing front doors of the house they had just escaped.

"Stay here, Lily. Lock the doors the second I step out," Marcus commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that brooked no argument, though he reached over to gently squeeze her shoulder before opening his door.

The driver of the silver sedan stepped out into the crisp winter air, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that mirrored Marcus’s own corporate armor, his face etched with an arrogant, unbothered smirk. It was Julian Vance, Marcus’s chief financial officer and—until this exact second—the man Marcus considered his closest confidant.

"Going somewhere in a hurry, Marcus?" Julian asked, his tone dripping with a casual, toxic familiarity that made the hairs on the back of Marcus’s neck stand up.

Marcus slammed his car door shut, the sound echoing like a gunshot across the paved driveway as he advanced on Julian, his fists clenching at his sides. "Get your car out of my way, Julian. I have an emergency with my daughter, and I don't have time for whatever bureaucratic nonsense you're bringing from the office."

Julian didn't flinch; instead, he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a manila envelope, tapping it against his open palm with a rhythmic, maddening slap. "Oh, this isn't office nonsense, old friend. This is a restructuring. You see, while you've been playing grieving widower and absentee father, I’ve been busy buying up the remaining shares of Vance-Harlow Enterprises."

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, a sudden, icy dread washing over him that had nothing to do with the winter wind.

"What are you talking about?" Marcus demanded, his eyes narrowing as he calculated the math, the corporate empire he had built from nothing suddenly hanging in the balance.

Julian chuckled, a sound devoid of any real warmth. "I’m talking about a coup, Marcus. I have the board. I have the majority. And as of ten minutes ago, you’ve been voted out as CEO. But more importantly, I know about Eleanor. In fact, I hired her."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Marcus felt the blood rush to his ears, a blinding, furious heat obliterating the cold air as the puzzle pieces violently crashed into place.

"You," Marcus whispered, the word escaping his throat like a snarl. "You planted her in my home. You targeted my daughter."

"Of course I did," Julian sneered, taking a step closer, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "A distracted man makes mistakes. I needed you broken, Marcus. I needed you so consumed by domestic tragedy that you wouldn't notice me bleeding your accounts dry. Eleanor was supposed to keep the girl quiet, but she got sloppy."

From inside the SUV, the faint sound of Lily’s frightened cry pierced through the heavy silence, shattering the last thread of Marcus’s legendary corporate restraint.

With a roar of pure, unadulterated primal rage, Marcus closed the distance between them, his fist connecting with Julian’s jaw in a brutal, explosive strike that sent the younger man crashing hard against the hood of the silver sedan.

Julian gasped, blood immediately welling at the corner of his lip as he scrambled to his feet, panic finally replacing his smug demeanor. "You're finished, Marcus! I'll ruin you! I'll take everything!"

"You won't take a damn thing," Marcus growled, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his expensive suit and slamming him against the car again, his face inches from the traitor's. "The police are already on their way for Eleanor. The footage from my house doesn't just show her; it shows the encrypted server she was uploading data to. Your server, Julian. I tracked the IP address before I even left the office."

Julian’s face drained of color, his bravado instantly evaporating into a hollow, pathetic terror as the distant wail of police sirens finally crested the hill, growing deafeningly loud.
