Chapter 2: What Was Hidden Under the Mattress
Everyone in that room held their breath.
The stepmother's face went white.
"Don't you dare touch that bag," she snapped.
"That cost more than your daughter's entire wardrobe."
Her father didn't even look up.
He picked up the scissors slowly, turned the Louis Vuitton bag over in his hands, and said very quietly, "Then I guess we're even."
One clean cut along the stitching.
Then another.
The stepmother screamed.
The stepsister stumbled backward.
But his daughter — the one still holding the ruined pink dress against her chest — just stood there, tears running silently down her face.
"Dad…" she whispered.
He looked at her, and something in his expression shifted.
Not anger.
Something older than anger.
"Go get ready," he said.
"You're still going to prom."
But then the stepmother grabbed her phone off the nightstand, hands shaking.
"You think this is over?" she said.
"Call your lawyer, because I already called mine."
That's when his daughter noticed something she hadn't seen before — a folded document half-hidden under the mattress edge.
The stepmother moved fast to block it.
Too fast.
