Chapter 2: The Photograph on the Counter


Daniel didn't look away from Vanessa's face.
"I spoke to your sister last week," he said quietly.
"She told me what happened to your first husband.
And what happened to *his* daughter."
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Sophie was still pressed against Daniel's chest, her small fingers gripping his shirt.
"She's lying," Vanessa finally whispered.
"Whatever she told you — she's lying.
She's always hated me."
"The little girl was four years old," Daniel said.
"Same age as Sophie."
The room went completely still.
Vanessa took one step back.
Then another.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I know enough." Daniel reached into his jacket pocket and placed something on the kitchen counter.
Vanessa looked down at it.
Her face didn't just go pale this time.
It crumbled.
Because what Daniel had placed on that counter was a photograph — and in that photograph was a child she had hoped everyone had forgotten.
Sophie looked up at her father.
"Daddy, who is that little girl?"
Daniel pulled Sophie close and didn't answer.
But Vanessa already knew.
And so did the woman now standing silently in the open doorway behind them — someone neither of them had heard come in.
