Chapter 2: The Message from HR

The laughter died the moment the elevator doors opened.

A sharp collective gasp moved through the hallway.

Three senior managers stepped out, folders in hand, mid-conversation — and stopped dead when they saw her.

"Ms.

Vance." The tallest one stepped forward immediately, his voice dropping low with respect.

"We didn't realize you were already here.

Your office is ready."

The blonde executive's laughter cut off like a switch had been flipped.

She turned.

Slowly.

Her face had gone completely white.

"Ms.

Vance?" she whispered.

The woman in grey straightened her jacket without looking at her.

"Clear my afternoon," she said calmly to the managers.

"And please call Legal."

"Legal?" The blonde woman's voice cracked.

"Why — what for?"

Ms.

Vance finally looked at her.

Just once.

Steady and cold.

"You'll find out."

She turned and walked toward the executive elevator.

The crowd parted without a word.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The blonde executive stood frozen beside the janitorial cart, her neon green suit suddenly looking very, very wrong in that hallway.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

The message was from HR.
