Chapter 2: The Pitch That Remembered

Part 2 ⬇️

The ball didn't break early.

It didn't tip Cole off.

It waited.

At the last possible moment — maybe six feet from the plate — it dropped and slid sideways like something alive, like it had changed its mind mid-air.

Cole's swing was already committed.

Big.

Confident.

The kind of swing that expects to make contact.

It found nothing but air.

The crack of the bat never came.

Just the soft pop of the ball settling into the catcher's mitt.

Dead silence.

Then Cole lowered his bat slowly and stared at the catcher's glove like he couldn't believe what he'd just seen.

Raymond let out a long, shaking breath.

"Isaiah," he whispered.

Just that one word.

Like a ghost had walked across the field.

Coach Carter didn't move.

Neither did Tariq.

It was one of the scouts who finally spoke — loud enough for the whole infield to hear.

"Where did that pitch come from?"

Cole turned around.

His expression had changed.

No more grin.

No more easy confidence.

Just something tight around his jaw that looked a lot like embarrassment.

"Lucky throw," he said.

But Raymond was already pushing through the gate, moving faster than a man with ruined knees should be able to move.

"That was no lucky throw," he said.

"And Cole — you know exactly what that pitch was."

Cole's eyes shifted.

Something passed across his face that nobody could quite read.

And then Raymond said a name that made Cole go completely still.

😶
