Chapter 2: The Voice on the Recording

Richard slowly turned toward Victoria.

“Tell me she’s mistaken.”

“She’s ill!” Victoria cried.

“Elena has been filling her head with lies!”

“That’s not true,” Elena gasped, struggling to rise.

“Ask your mother why Victoria wanted me out of this room.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“Don’t listen to her, Richard.

Call the police!”

His mother gripped his sleeve.

“The papers…

she wanted me to sign the papers.”

“What papers?” Richard demanded.

Victoria backed toward the door.

“She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Elena reached beneath the bed with a shaking hand and pulled out a torn envelope.

Richard snatched it from her.

Inside was a document transferring his mother’s house and savings to Victoria.

The signature line was marked—but the signature looked wrong.

Richard stared at his wife.

“You told me Mother asked you to handle her finances.”

“She did!”

“No,” the old woman whispered.

“She threatened me.”

Then Elena’s phone lit up on the floor.

A recording was still running.

Victoria lunged for it.

“Turn that off!”

Richard picked it up first.

A woman’s voice filled the room:

“Once Richard believes Elena did it, no one will question the signature.”

Richard went pale—but then a man’s voice answered from the recording, and everyone froze.

Elena knew that voice.
