Chapter 5: The Secret Claire Never Told Her Father

Richard left around nine.
He had kissed the baby's forehead and squeezed Claire's shoulder at the door and told her he would handle everything and that she should rest.
She had nodded and let him believe it.
When the door closed, she sat very still on the edge of the bed for a long moment.
Then she got up, laid the baby gently in the center of the mattress surrounded by pillows, and walked to the window.
The city was lit up below.
She watched it without really seeing it.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from a number she hadn't seen in over two years.
*I heard what happened in the lobby.
We need to talk.*
She stared at the screen.
The name attached to the number was one she had not spoken aloud since the day she left.
Since the morning she had packed a single bag, walked out of a different building entirely, and told herself she would never have a reason to look back.
She typed back: *How did you know I was here?*
The reply came in under a minute: *I still know people at this property.
Claire, it's important.
What happened tonight — Vivienne Aldcroft wasn't there by coincidence.*
Claire's hand went still.
She typed: *What do you mean?*
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
*She knew you were coming.
Someone told her you'd be here this weekend.
I don't know who yet.
But she's been asking questions about you for the past three weeks.
About your father.
About the trust.*
Claire lowered the phone slowly.
The trust.
Two words that opened a door she had worked very hard to keep shut.
Her grandfather had established it before he died.
A significant sum, structured carefully, with conditions attached.
Richard was the primary trustee.
Claire was the named beneficiary upon certain terms being met — terms that Vivienne Aldcroft's late husband had spent years trying to contest on behalf of a competing claim.
The case had been settled.
Quietly.
Everyone had moved on.
Or so Claire had believed.
She picked up the phone again.
*Who are you talking to?
Who's your source?*
The reply: *Someone who works in guest services.
She overheard Vivienne on the phone in the bar an hour ago.
She was asking about your married name.
And she said something else.* A pause.
Then: *She said she didn't intend to make a second mistake.
Claire, the first mistake wasn't shoving you in the lobby.
That was just what we all saw.
Something happened before that.
Something we don't know about yet.*
Claire sat down in the chair her father had been sitting in twenty minutes earlier.
The baby made a soft sound from the bed.
She looked over.
Still sleeping.
She typed: *Can your source remember anything else?
Anything specific?*
The reply was immediate this time: *One thing.
When she got the information about you — whatever it was — she said: "Good.
Then he doesn't know." Your contact thinks she was talking about your father.*
Claire read it twice.
*He doesn't know.*
Know what?
She stood up and walked back to the window.
The city below was the same as before.
Nothing had changed outside the glass.
But something had shifted in the room.
She had come to this hotel for a weekend stay.
A quiet trip with the baby to see her father, who happened to own the building, who happened to be in the city for a board meeting.
A simple, private visit.
Vivienne Aldcroft had not walked into her in the lobby by accident.
She had been looking for her.
And she had found something — something about Claire, something she believed Richard did not know — and she had decided that gave her power.
Claire picked up her phone one more time.
She did not text her father.
Not yet.
She needed to know what she was dealing with before she brought him into it.
She typed to the unknown number: *I need to meet with your source.
Tonight if possible.
Not in the hotel.*
The reply took longer this time.
Then: *She gets off shift at eleven.
There's a coffee place two blocks east.
She said she'll be there.
May you like
And Claire — she said to tell you to be careful.
Vivienne isn't working alone.*
