Chapter 2: Something She Never Told You
Adrian couldn't speak.
He stood in the middle of the room staring at the screen, his hands shaking.
Emma was still crying in his arms.
Clara was still standing where he had left her — cheek red, eyes wet, not saying a word.
"Adrian." Olivia's voice was quiet.
"You need to say something."
He turned to Vanessa.
Vanessa had stopped sobbing.
Her face had changed.
The tears were gone.
What replaced them was something colder.
"It was an accident," she said.
"I didn't mean for it to go that far."
Clara let out a breath like she'd been h*t again.
"An accident?" Olivia said.
"You pointed at her.
You let Dad—"
"Enough." Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"This family was fine before she came into it."
Adrian finally looked at Clara.
Really looked at her.
"Clara…
I—"
But Vanessa stepped between them.
"Don't." She lowered her voice so only Adrian could hear.
"If you apologize to her right now, you'll regret it.
I know something about Clara.
Something she never told you."
Adrian went still.
Clara's eyes moved to Vanessa's face.
And for the first time that evening, Vanessa smiled.
