Chapter 2: The Envelope That Silenced the Room

Brooke’s smile vanished.
Chad stared at me, then forced a laugh.
“That’s impossible,” he said.
“You’re just trying to embarrass us.”
I tightened my hands around the wheels of my chair.
“No, Chad.
Embarrassment is what you did to me—and to the attendant who showed me more dignity in two minutes than Brooke did during our entire engagement.”
The room fell silent.
Brooke stepped closer.
“Please, we can discuss this privately.”
“You wanted an audience five minutes ago,” I replied.
“Now you have one.”
The attendant placed a sealed envelope on my lap.
“Sir, this was delivered for you.”
Chad’s face changed when he saw the hospitality group’s legal seal.
“What’s in that envelope?” Brooke whispered.
I opened it slowly.
“A report concerning missing charity funds—and the name of the person who authorized the transfers.”
Chad grabbed Brooke’s arm.
“You told me those records were gone.”
Everyone heard him.
Brooke pulled away, trembling.
“Chad, stop talking.”
Then the ballroom doors opened, and the group’s chief attorney walked in with a woman Brooke clearly recognized.
The woman looked straight at her and said, “Tell him what you did before I do.”
Brooke went completely pale.
