Chapter 2: The Envelope That Changed Everything

Part 2 ⬇️
The moment my father Daniel turned to face Victoria, the laughter died in her throat.
She tried to smile.
"Daniel, darling, I was only—"
"I heard every word," he said quietly.
The courtyard went still.
Guests in evening gowns and dinner jackets stopped moving.
Even the music from inside seemed to fade.
Chloe stepped closer to her mother.
"Dad, she was just joking around.
You know how we are."
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Then he looked at me.
I had been standing with my hands at my sides, trying not to cry in front of all those people.
I had been doing that my whole life.
"How long?" he asked me.
Not them.
Me.
I couldn't answer.
Then someone touched my arm from behind.
I turned around.
It was my father's older sister.
Aunt Ruth.
She had flown in from Edinburgh for the gala.
I hadn't seen her in six years.
She was holding something in her hand.
A small envelope.
Old.
Worn at the edges.
She looked at Victoria with an expression I had never seen on her face before.
"I think," Aunt Ruth said slowly, "it's time Daniel reads what his wife signed her name to three years ago."
Victoria's face went completely white.
---
What was in that envelope — and what did Victoria sign?
Daniel is about to find out, and nothing will be the same after tonight.
