Chapter 2: The Name on the Phone

Part 2 ⬇️

I stood in the kitchen doorway, still holding the documents Robert had shoved into my hands twenty minutes earlier.

My name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed anything.

"Mom, please." Robert's voice dropped low.

"Just don't say anything to Megan yet.

I'm handling it."

"Handling it?" I set the papers down on the counter slowly.

"Robert, this is my house.

Your father and I—"

"I know what it is." He cut me off.

His jaw was tight.

"But if Megan finds out you know, it's going to get ugly.

You don't understand what she's capable of."

I looked at my son — really looked at him — and for the first time I didn't recognize the man standing in front of me.

"Are you protecting her," I asked quietly, "or are you protecting yourself?"

He didn't answer.

That silence told me everything and nothing all at once.

Then his phone buzzed on the counter.

He grabbed it fast — too fast — and turned the screen away from me.

But not before I saw the name on the notification.

It wasn't Megan.

💬 Margaret saw a name on that phone — and it changes everything she thought she knew.

The full truth is darker than anyone in that family expected.
