Chapter 2: What Gerald Had Been Carrying

The manager's name was Gerald.
He had worked for my family for over thirty years.
He stepped in front of the receptionist and turned to face the lobby.
"This woman," he said, his voice steady and loud, "is not just the owner of this hotel."
He paused.
"Her late father built half the properties in this city.
And her brother currently sits on the board of the national hospitality authority.
The authority that issues and revokes operating licenses."
The lobby went completely silent.
The receptionist was still on her knees.
Her face had gone from pale to grey.
"I didn't know," she whispered.
"I swear I didn't know."
Gerald looked down at her without a trace of sympathy.
"That's exactly the problem," he said quietly.
"You never bothered to find out."
My son tugged my sleeve.
"Mama, why is she crying?"
I looked down at him.
"Because she made a choice, sweetheart.
And choices have consequences."
Then Gerald turned to me, and something shifted in his expression.
It wasn't professional courtesy anymore.
It was something older.
Something heavier.
"There's something else," he said, lowering his voice so only I could hear.
"Something about your father I should have told you a long time ago."
My chest tightened.
"What do you mean?"
He glanced at my son, then back at me.
"Not here," he said.
"Please."
