Chapter 2: The Woman Who Had Been Watching

The silence that followed was suffocating.

The bride's mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.

Every eye in the room had turned toward her.

The groom's sister looked down at her soaked shoes, then slowly back up.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't need to.

"It's fine, Daniel," she said quietly.

"I think she's just nervous."

But Daniel wasn't smiling anymore.

"Nervous doesn't pour champagne on someone holding a baby," he said.

His voice was low and controlled — which somehow made it worse.

The bride grabbed his arm again.

"Daniel, I didn't know — I thought she was one of the staff —"

"And if she was?" he said.

"Would that make it acceptable?"

She went silent.

That was when an older woman stepped forward from the edge of the room.

Silver hair, straight posture, dressed in deep navy.

She had been watching from the moment the champagne hit the floor.

She looked at the bride for a long moment without speaking.

Then she turned to Daniel and said four words, just loud enough for the nearest guests to hear.

"We need to talk." 😶

The bride's eyes darted between them.

Something about the older woman's expression made her stomach drop.

Because she had seen that woman before.

She just couldn't remember where.
