Chapter 2: The Message From a Stranger

The photograph showed a house I had never seen before.

But the address printed in the corner of the listing sheet stopped my breath.

It was one street over from mine.

"What is this?" I asked.

Ashley sat up straighter.

"It's the house we want to buy.

We put in an offer three weeks ago."

"And how exactly are you planning to pay for it?"

Nobody answered.

Daniel stared at the table.

George cleared his throat.

Patricia suddenly found something fascinating on her phone.

"Daniel." My voice was quiet.

"Look at me."

He did.

And that was when I saw it — not guilt, but something closer to shame.

"We were going to use the equity from your house as the down payment, Mom.

Ashley found a way to list it without…

without needing your signature on the initial paperwork."

The room went completely still.

"Without my signature," I repeated slowly.

Ashley leaned forward.

"It was all going to be explained to you once everything was in place.

You would have had a perfectly nice condo, fully paid for—"

"You were going to sell my home," I said, "and present it to me as a done deal."

George shifted in his chair.

"Now, Eleanor, let's not be dramatic—"

My phone buzzed on the table.

I glanced down.

It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.

*Mrs.

Hale — please don't sign anything.

There's something about your son's finances you urgently need to know.*

What that message revealed next left Eleanor with no choice but to fight back — harder than any of them expected.
