Chapter 2: The Signature in the Blue Folder

Sarah marched to the door and pounded on it.

“Open this door right now!”

I stayed behind the glass.

“You told me to clear out a bedroom.

I chose yours.”

David stepped forward, his face pale.

“Mom, stop embarrassing us.

The movers will be here any minute.”

“Then they can move your furniture somewhere else.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“This is David’s home too.”

“No,” I replied.

“He is a temporary guest in my home.”

David finally looked me in the eye.

“You can’t just throw us out.”

“I offered you a place to stay.

I did not give you my bedroom, my house, or permission to order me around.”

Sarah turned toward David.

“Tell her.

She needs to know before the movers arrive.”

“Tell me what?” I asked.

David’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Sarah reached into the SUV and pulled out a blue folder.

“Your son promised me this house would belong to us soon.”

My stomach tightened.

“That isn’t true,” David muttered.

“Then why did you give me this?” Sarah snapped.

She opened the folder and held up a document bearing my address—and a signature that looked exactly like mine.

I had never seen it before.

Then a moving truck stopped at the curb, and the driver called out, “We have an order for Kimberly Porter.

Which belongings are being removed?”

Sarah slowly turned toward me, but for the first time that morning, she looked afraid.
