Chapter 2: I Lost It on Purpose

Part 2 ⬇️

Isabella had just refilled Ethan's glass when Brooke's voice cut across the room.

"Why is he still here?" she said to Chad, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear.

"Someone should call the staff and have him removed."

A few guests laughed softly.

Others looked away.

Ethan didn't flinch.

He simply set down his glass and watched her.

Isabella's hand tightened around the serving tray.

She leaned down quietly and said, "Sir, do you need anything?"

"No," Ethan said.

"But thank you, Isabella."

Brooke turned at the sound of his voice.

Something in his calm seemed to irritate her more than anger would have.

"Still putting on that dignified act?" she said, stepping closer.

"You have nothing left, Ethan.

No company.

No money.

No future.

Just that chair."

Chad placed a hand on her shoulder, smiling.

Then a man in a dark suit entered from the far side of the ballroom.

He walked directly toward Ethan, leaned down, and handed him a sealed envelope.

The room noticed.

Ethan opened it slowly.

Read it.

Then looked up at Brooke with an expression no one in that room had ever seen on him before.

"You're right," he said quietly.

"I did lose everything."

He paused.

"I lost it on purpose."

Brooke's smile disappeared.
