I watched that video four times.
Each time, Ethan's nod was still there.
My husband.
The father of my child.
He had watched his mother position her hands on my back — and he had nodded.
I set the phone down before I dropped it.
The nurse touched my arm.
"Are you okay?"
I couldn't answer.
Twenty minutes later, Ethan walked back into the room with Margaret right behind him.
She was carrying flowers.
Smiling like she'd already won.
"We thought we'd check on you," she said sweetly.
I looked at Ethan.
"I have something to show you."
He barely glanced at me.
"You need to rest."
"Ethan." My voice didn't shake.
"Sit down."
Margaret stepped forward.
"She's trying to manipulate you again.
The doctor said stress is—"
"I have the video."
The flowers dropped slightly in her hands.
Ethan went still.
"The neighbor's doorbell camera," I said.
"It caught everything.
Including you." I looked straight at him.
"At the top of the stairs."
Margaret's smile didn't disappear all at once.
It faded — slowly — like she was calculating how much I actually knew.
Then she said something I will never forget.
"That camera has been broken for months.
Everyone on the street knows it."
I felt the air leave the room.
Because Ethan nodded again.
