Chapter 2: Written In as the One Who Pays

"Five fifty-eight," the manager said.
The table went completely quiet.
Valerie had told me eight-thirty.
But she had booked the restaurant for six o'clock and seated twelve people two minutes early.
That wasn't a miscommunication.
That was a plan.
Daniel stood up.
"Mom, let's just talk about this outside."
"There's nothing to talk about outside," I said.
"Everything I need is right here."
I turned back to the manager.
"Is there anything else on that reservation?
Any notes?"
He hesitated.
Then he read from the screen.
"It says — *birthday dinner for the family.
One guest arriving separately at eight-thirty to settle the bill.*"
Someone at the table made a small sound.
I didn't look to see who.
I had been written into the reservation as the person who pays.
Not as a guest.
Not as Daniel's mother.
As the one who settles the bill.
Valerie's voice came from behind me, quieter now.
"Evelyn, you're overreacting."
I didn't answer her.
Because I had just noticed something else.
A woman at the far end of the table — someone I didn't recognize — had her eyes down and her hands flat on the tablecloth.
She hadn't laughed once all evening.
And when the manager read that note aloud, she had flinched.
She knew something.
I was certain of it.
I took one step toward her — and Daniel moved to block me.
