Chapter 2: Grandma Showed Me a Paper

Part 2 ⬇️
I stood on that porch and stared at my daughter.
She was sitting on the ground, a chain looped around her small wrist, tied to the post like she was something to be kept out of the way.
Inside, I could hear laughing.
Music.
The sound of her own birthday party going on without her.
I dropped to my knees and started pulling at the chain.
My hands were shaking.
"Who did this?" I said.
"Who put this on her?"
My daughter looked up at me.
She didn't cry.
She just said, "Grandma said I had to wait outside."
I looked through the window.
My mother-in-law was standing at the cake table, smiling, handing out plates to the other grandchildren.
My husband was right beside her.
He saw me through the glass.
He looked away.
That was the moment I knew this wasn't about a birthday party.
I got my daughter free and carried her inside.
The room went quiet.
My mother-in-law turned slowly.
Her expression didn't change.
"I told you," she said, loud enough for everyone to hear.
"That child is not part of this family."
My husband said nothing.
Then my daughter tugged my sleeve and whispered something that made my whole body go cold.
"Mommy…
Grandma showed me a paper.
She said it had Daddy's real name on it."
---
What was written on that paper — and what did it mean for everyone in that room?
The truth goes deeper than anyone expected.
