Chapter 2: The Envelope She Never Expected

PART 2 ⬇️

Daniel's voice was steady, but there was no warmth in it.

"Vanessa.

Why is your sister's chair at the kitchen table?"

The ballroom went completely silent.

Vanessa laughed — that small, practiced laugh she used when she wanted people to think a situation was beneath her.

"Daniel, this is not the moment—"

"Answer the question."

Her smile didn't recover.

She looked around the room, searching for someone to help her, but every face was waiting.

"She's my half-sister," Vanessa said carefully.

"The seating reflects that."

Daniel stared at her for a long moment.

Then he set the microphone down, walked to Table Seven, and personally carried a chair back to the empty space between Grandma Margaret and Aunt Patricia.

"Sit down, Clara," he said quietly.

I hadn't moved.

I was still standing near the doors, and I couldn't tell if what I felt was relief or something closer to grief.

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm and said something low and sharp that I couldn't hear.

Whatever it was, it made him go very still.

Then Grandma Margaret opened her handbag and placed a sealed envelope on the table.

"I was going to wait until after the reception," she said.

"But I think now is the right time."

Vanessa's eyes locked onto that envelope — and the color left her face completely.

---

What's inside that envelope — and why is Vanessa so afraid of it?

The full truth is more shocking than anyone in that ballroom expected.
