Chapter 2: What the Phone Already Knew

Inside the house, Ethan sat me down in a quiet sitting room and knelt in front of me, still holding my hands.
"Mom, why didn't you tell me you were coming?"
"I needed to see for myself," I said simply.
He closed his eyes.
He already understood.
A moment later, the door opened.
Vanessa stepped in, her expression carefully reset — soft, apologetic, practiced.
Patricia followed two steps behind her like a shadow.
"I am so sorry," Vanessa said, her voice smooth as silk.
"I genuinely had no idea.
Please forgive me."
I looked at her without speaking.
She shifted slightly.
"It was an honest mistake.
Anyone would have—"
"Vanessa." Ethan's voice was quiet but sharp.
"Stop."
Patricia stepped forward.
"What my daughter means is that this was a terrible misunderstanding, and we would love the chance to make it right.
Perhaps dinner this week—"
"There's no need," I said calmly.
All three of them looked at me.
I reached into my grocery bag and set my phone on the table between us.
The screen was still lit.
The recording timer read 1:47:23.
Vanessa's face went very still.
"Every word," I said.
"From the moment I walked through that gate."
Patricia's hand found her daughter's arm.
Neither of them spoke.
But I noticed something — Patricia's eyes didn't go to the phone.
They went to her husband, who was still standing outside the glass door, already on his own phone, already talking to someone.
The question was who.
