Chapter 2: The Key She Was Never Given

Two hundred people were staring at me.
Michael grabbed my wrist.
"That's enough," he said through his teeth.
"You've made your point."
I didn't move.
"I haven't made it yet."
I looked out at the room and kept my voice steady.
"What my husband forgot to mention is that we signed a prenuptial agreement.
My apartment, my savings, and my business shares remain mine.
No relative from either family may occupy my separately owned property without my written consent."
Someone gasped near the front tables.
Margaret stood up.
"Caroline." Her voice was silk over stone.
"This is not the place."
"You chose the place," I said.
"Not me."
Michael dropped my wrist.
His face had gone from red to pale.
Margaret walked toward the stage slowly, smiling at the guests as if nothing serious was happening.
But her eyes told a different story.
She stopped just below the stage and looked up at me.
"You think that little document protects you?" she said quietly.
"We'll see how long that lasts."
Then she reached into her evening bag and placed something on the edge of the stage.
A key.
My apartment key.
The one I had never given her.
The room went completely silent.
