Chapter 2: The Name That Drained His Face

The woman knelt down slowly, her eyes never leaving the child's face.
"What is your name, sweetheart?" she whispered.
The little girl swallowed hard.
"Lily."
"And who gave you this locket, Lily?"
The girl's chin trembled.
"My mama.
Before she went away.
She said…
she said if anything ever happened to her, I had to find the woman who had the other half.
She said that woman would know the truth."
The older woman felt the room tilt around her.
*Went away.* Those two words landed like stones.
"Where is your mother now?"
Lily looked down at her shoes.
"She's g0ne.
Three months ago.
The people at the home said she got very sick.
But before she left the hospital, she gave me this and made me promise."
A heavy silence fell over the guests nearby.
Then a sharp voice cut through it.
"Edna." A well-dressed man stepped forward from the edge of the crowd, his jaw tight.
"Don't.
You don't know what that child is telling you.
You don't know who sent her here."
Edna stood up slowly, her eyes still fixed on Lily.
"Her mother's name," she said quietly.
"What was her mother's name?"
Lily looked up with wet eyes.
And the name she spoke made the color drain from the man's face completely.

What Lily said next revealed a secret that man had spent twenty years trying to bury.
