Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The security officers caught Richard before he reached the door.
He twisted against them, still holding my son.
Still holding him.
"Let go of the baby," the nurse said.
Her voice was steady but her hands weren't.
Richard looked at her.
Then at me.
Then he laughed — a short, ugly sound.
"You have no idea how much he was worth."
One of the officers pried my son from his arms.
I couldn't breathe until that baby was back against my chest.
Daniel hadn't moved from the doorway.
He was staring at his father like he was looking at a stranger.
"Dad…
what did you do?"
Richard said nothing.
Jessica sat down hard on the edge of a chair.
Her face had gone the color of ash.
The nurse opened the sealed file and placed one page on the bed beside me.
A name.
A wire transfer.
A date — three days before my due date.
Someone had known I was carrying triplets before I did.
I looked up at Daniel.
"How long have you known about this?"
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
And that's when his phone rang — and the name on the screen made the nurse reach for her radio.
