Chapter 2: The Folder on the Desk

Part 2 is here.

That last business meeting had been three months ago.
Now Adrian sat by the window every morning, watching the city move without him.
His assistant Marcus left reports on the desk.
Adrian signed them without reading them.
His younger brother Daniel had started showing up more often.
Always with a smile.
Always with coffee.
Always asking questions that felt less like concern and more like inventory.
"You should think about stepping back," Daniel said one afternoon.
"Officially, I mean.
Let someone else carry the weight."
Adrian didn't answer.
Daniel set a folder on the desk.
"I had legal draw this up.
Just a temporary transfer.
Until you're feeling more like yourself."
Adrian looked at the folder but didn't touch it.
"I'm still myself," he said quietly.
Daniel's smile didn't move.
"Of course you are."
After Daniel left, Adrian opened the folder.
It wasn't temporary.
It was a full transfer of control.
Dated two weeks ago.
And at the bottom, in ink that looked almost like his own handwriting, was a signature.
His name.
He hadn't signed anything two weeks ago.
He hadn't left his room in two weeks.
What Adrian found on the next page made his hands go still.

The truth about what Daniel had been doing while Adrian was focused on surviving is darker than anyone imagined.
