Chapter 2: What Jason Remembered

Part 2 — continued from the comments 👇
Jason's legs wouldn't move.
His mouth opened and closed like he was trying to speak, but nothing came out.
From Emily's phone, Chief Carter's voice dropped lower — and somehow that was worse.
"Don't you touch her again.
Don't you move.
I'm already on my way."
One of the boys at the top of the hill turned and ran.
Then another.
Within seconds, half the crowd had scattered into the trees, phones shoved deep into their pockets.
But Jason stayed frozen.
Emily was still in the swamp, mud soaking through her clothes, her wheelchair tilted at a hard angle against the bank.
She clutched the phone to her ear with both hands, her whole body shaking.
"Dad, I can't get out," she whispered.
"I can't move the chair."
"I know, baby.
Stay on the line.
Don't hang up."
Then one of Jason's friends — a boy named Ryan who had been laughing the loudest — suddenly grabbed Jason's arm.
"Dude, her dad is the Chief.
THE Chief.
Do you understand what you just did?"
Jason shook him off.
But his eyes told a different story.
Because in that moment, Jason remembered something he had never told anyone — something that connected him to Chief Carter long before today.
Something that, if it came out now, would make everything infinitely worse.
😨
He slowly looked down at Emily.
And for the first time, his expression wasn't smug.
It was afraid.
