Chapter 2: The Papers Are Already Signed
Victor stepped into the doorway, his eyes moving slowly from Sarah on the floor to Victoria holding the child.
Sarah reached toward him.
"Victor, please.
Tell her.
Tell her she can't do this."
Victoria didn't flinch.
She pulled the boy closer and smiled.
"Go ahead, Victor," she said.
"Tell her."
The room went completely still.
Victor didn't look at Sarah.
He looked at Victoria — and he nodded.
Sarah felt the air leave her body.
"You planned this," she whispered.
"Both of you."
Victoria laughed softly.
"We've been planning this for a long time, Sarah."
"He's two years old, Victoria.
He's a baby.
You can't just—"
"I can," Victoria said.
"And I have.
The papers are already signed."
Sarah's hands pressed flat against the floor.
She tried to stand.
Her legs were shaking.
"What papers?
What did you sign, Victor?
What did you do?"
Victor finally looked at her.
His face was calm.
Too calm.
"It's over, Sarah," he said quietly.
"You should go."
Sarah stared at the man she had trusted for six years — and realized she was looking at a stranger.
Then the boy reached out his small hand toward her and said one word.
"Mama."
And Victoria turned her back and walked toward the door.
