Chapter 2: What Amy Had Been Carrying Alone

The officer spread the papers on the hood of his car so I could see them clearly.
My name was gone.
Not crossed out.
Not corrected.
Gone — replaced with Teresa Bradley on a deed transfer document that had been notarized three weeks ago.
My hands were shaking.
"Connor." The officer's voice was steady.
"Do you recognize this signature?"
I looked at the line where my name should have been.
I had never signed that document.
I turned to my mother.
She was still in handcuffs, still standing on my front lawn, and she looked me straight in the eye.
"I did what was necessary," she said.
"You were never going to do it yourself."
I couldn't speak.
Then Amy touched my arm — quietly, the way she always did when she was trying not to fall apart.
"Connor," she said.
"There's something else.
Something I didn't tell you because I was scared of what you'd do."
She reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out her phone and showed me a voice recording.
Her hand was trembling.
"I made this two months ago," she said.
"The night Teresa told me that if I ever said a word to you — she'd make sure you believed her over me."
I pressed play.
And the first voice I heard wasn't Teresa's.
It was Mason's.
