Chapter 2: The Woman With the Phone

Part 2 — continued in the comments ⬇️
---
The doors burst open before the paramedics even reached us.
Two officers walked in first.
The ballroom, already silent, seemed to shrink.
Preston straightened.
Smoothed his jacket.
Shifted into the version of himself he showed the world — calm, polished, reasonable.
"Officers." His voice was steady.
"There's been a misunderstanding."
"Sir, we received a call about an injured child."
"She tripped." He didn't hesitate.
"It was an accident.
The family is handling it."
I looked up from Sophie.
"He h*t her with that." I pointed to the oak board, still lying on the floor where it had fallen.
"She's eight years old."
Preston turned to me slowly.
The smile was gone.
What replaced it was something colder.
"Careful, Evelyn." Quiet.
Almost gentle.
"You really don't want to do this tonight."
One of the officers stepped between us and crouched down to Sophie's level.
"Sweetheart.
Can you tell me what happened?"
Sophie lifted her face from my shoulder.
She looked at Preston.
Then she looked at the officer.
And in a voice so small it barely carried —
"He said I st*le something.
But I didn't.
And then he…"
She stopped.
Her hand went back to the side of her head.
That's when a woman near the back of the room stood up slowly.
A guest no one had introduced.
No one had spoken to.
She was holding her phone up.
"I have it on video," she said.
"All of it."
Preston went completely still.
