Chapter 2: What Jessica Found

Margaret didn't move for a long moment.

She just stared at the envelope like it might disappear if she waited long enough.

Then Daniel pushed through the patio door.

"What is going on out here?"

I turned to face him.

"Ask your mother."

He looked at Margaret on the ground.

He looked at Lily, still standing by the porch post, her little wrists red from the chain.

Something crossed his face.

Not guilt.

Not yet.

"You hit my mother."

"Your mother chained our five-year-old daughter to a post like an animal."

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Margaret finally picked up the envelope.

Her hands were steady now.

Too steady.

She pulled out the report, scanned the first line — and then she laughed.

Not a nervous laugh.

A slow, deliberate one.

"You think this changes anything?"

She held the paper up so Daniel could see it.

"Your wife has been carrying this around for months, Daniel.

Ask yourself why she waited until today.

Ask yourself what she was really planning."

Daniel's eyes moved from the report to me.

And for one terrible second, I saw doubt flicker across his face.

That was when Jessica stepped outside holding her phone.

Her face was white.

"Daniel," she said quietly.

"You need to see what I just found."
