Chapter 2: The Boy Who Told the Truth

Two officers entered the backyard before the ambulance doors were even open.
Tyler straightened immediately.
His voice shifted — calm, concerned, the version of himself he saved for people who didn't know him.
"Officer, my sister lost her balance near the railing.
We've been trying to help her."
I looked up from the ground.
"He pushed me.
Both hands.
Into the railing."
Harold stepped forward.
"She's been unstable since the will reading.
This is a family matter."
The officer looked at Harold.
Then at me.
Then at Sarah, who hadn't moved from my side.
Sarah spoke quietly.
"Spinal impact.
No sensation below the waist.
This is not a family matter anymore."
Diane made a sound like a sob, but her eyes were dry.
Then Lauren's voice cut through — small, shaking, almost accidental.
"Mason, don't—"
Everyone turned.
Mason, seven years old, still in his birthday party clothes, was standing at the edge of the deck stairs.
He'd been there the whole time.
His small hand was gripping the broken railing.
"Daddy pushed Aunt Bridget," he said.
"I saw it."
The backyard went completely still.
Tyler's face didn't crumble.
It went white.
Lauren pulled Mason against her so fast the boy gasped.
Her eyes met Tyler's — and what I saw in her face wasn't fear of the police.
It was fear of him.
That was the moment I understood.
Lauren knew something.
Something older than today.
And she had been too afraid to say it.

What Lauren had been hiding changes everything.
