Chapter 2: Six Words

The police came through the front door in under four minutes.

Two officers.

Calm, fast, professional.

They took one look at the napkin pressed against my temple and separated the room immediately.

Adrian was moved to the far end of the hallway.

I stayed where I was.

Maya did not move from my side.

One of the officers crouched slightly to look at my head.

"Ma'am, can you tell me what happened?"

"My husband struck me with a ceramic dinner plate," I said.

"In front of approximately twenty people."

The officer looked around the room.

"Did anyone here witness this?"

Silence.

Then Maya said, "I did."

Charles took a step toward her.

"Maya.

Don't."

She didn't look at him.

"I witnessed it.

And there's something else." Her voice dropped.

"You need to check the basement."

The second officer's hand moved to his radio.

Adrian's face went the color of old ash.

"There is nothing in that basement," he said.

His voice was too controlled.

Too rehearsed.

The voice of a man who had practiced that sentence.

Maya finally turned and looked at him.

"Then you won't mind them looking."

---

What is hidden in that basement — and how long has this family been protecting Adrian?

The full truth is darker than anyone at that table expected.
