Chapter 2: She Was Already Reaching for Her Phone


I spun around.
My mother was standing at the back door, breathing hard, her eyes locked on Lily.
Not on me.
On Lily.
"Come inside," she said.
Her voice was flat.
"It's cold."
"Don't move," I told Lily.
I stood up slowly and faced my mother.
"Where is my wife?"
She didn't answer.
She looked past me again at Lily, and something in her expression made my stomach drop.
"Mom.
Where is Sarah?"
"She left." She folded her arms.
"She packed a bag this morning and walked out.
I didn't want to upset you at work."
Lily made a small sound behind me.
I turned.
Her face had gone tight.
She was shaking her head.
"That's not true, Dad."
My mother's voice sharpened.
"Children don't understand what they see."
"Lily." I knelt down.
"Tell me exactly what you saw."
She looked at my mother.
Then back at me.
She leaned close to my ear.
What she whispered made me stand up so fast I nearly knocked her over.
I looked at my mother.
She wasn't denying it.
She was already reaching for her phone.
