Chapter 2: Some Doors Should Stay Closed

The older woman's smile came back.

Slower this time.

Deliberate.

"You're confused, sweetheart.

It's your wedding day.

Emotions run high."

"I'm not confused." The bride tightened her grip on the maid's hand.

"Tell me her name.

You know it.

I can see that you know it."

"I don't know what you think you saw—"

"Say her name."

The room was silent now.

Fully silent.

The groom appeared at the edge of the crowd.

He looked at his mother first.

Not at his bride.

His mother.

That one look said everything.

"How long?" the bride asked.

Her voice didn't shake.

"How long have you known about her?"

The older woman said nothing.

"She's been working in this hotel for three months." The bride's voice dropped.

"You chose this venue.

You hired the catering company.

You approved every single name on the staff list."

The maid went very still beside her.

"You put her here," the bride whispered.

"Why?

To watch?

To make sure she never said a word?"

The older woman leaned in close.

Her voice was barely a breath.

"Because some doors," she said quietly, "should stay closed."

The bride stared at her.

Then she looked at the groom.

He still hadn't moved.

And that was when the maid spoke for the first time since it all began.

"There's something else," she said.

"Something I didn't show you yet."

What she pulled out next made the bride's face go white.
