Chapter 2: What Was at the Bottom of the Bag

Part 2 ⬇️

Inside the bag were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Pictures of my wife, Claire.

Taken through windows.

Through car windshields.

At the school gate.

At the grocery store.

Marlene had been watching her for months.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

"What is this?" I turned to face her.

"What were you planning to do with these?"

Marlene was already on her feet, smoothing her blouse like nothing had happened.

"I was protecting you," she said.

"That woman is not who you think she is."

"She's my wife."

"She's been lying to you since the day you met her."

Lily grabbed my sleeve.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Grandma showed me those pictures, Dad.

She told me if I told Mom, something bad would happen to her."

Nine years old.

Carrying this alone.

"How long?" I asked Marlene.

She didn't answer.

It was Claire.

I almost answered it.

Then I saw the last photograph at the bottom of the bag — and I understood why Marlene had been so desperate to get it back.

---

What was in that final photograph — and what has Marlene been hiding about Claire?

The full truth is darker than you think.
