Chapter 2: The Woman With the Briefcase

Part 2 ⬇️

My lawyer's name was Sandra Okafor.

She had never lost a case like this.

The doorbell rang a second time.

Daniel didn't move.

Neither did Victoria.

Neither did Brooke.

I opened the door myself.

Sandra stepped inside, glanced once around the room, and handed me the envelope without a word.

She had done this enough times to know that silence, in a moment like this, was the sharpest tool in the room.

"What is that?" Daniel's voice came out smaller than I had ever heard it.

"Everything," I said.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Daniel, call your lawyer.

Right now.

Call him."

"He already knows," Sandra said, pleasantly.

"We spoke yesterday."

That stopped Victoria cold.

Brooke looked between her brother and Sandra.

Something was shifting behind her eyes — not guilt, not quite.

Calculation.

"There's a second filing," Sandra said, turning to me.

"The one we discussed last week.

Do you want to proceed?"

I looked at Daniel.

He was gripping the back of a chair.

His knuckles had gone white.

"What second filing?" he said.

"What is she talking about?"

I hadn't told him about that part.

I hadn't told him about a lot of things.

What Daniel discovered inside that envelope made his lawyer go silent for a full minute.
