Chapter 2: What the Camera Never Forgets
The room went completely still.
Victoria's face had gone white.
Her husband stood with his arms crossed, not looking at her.
Not even once.
"You have nothing to say?" Julian asked her quietly.
Victoria opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
One of the guests stepped closer to the television screen.
The footage was still playing.
Everyone could see it clearly — Victoria's own hand slipping the necklace into Elena's bag while Elena was setting the table with her back turned.
"I want everyone out of my house," Victoria finally said.
Her voice had changed.
The confidence was gone.
"This is my house too," her husband said.
"And I am not going anywhere."
Elena stood near the doorway, still shaking.
A woman she had never met before walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"We all saw it," the woman said.
"You did nothing wrong."
But then Julian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression shifted.
"It's the building manager," he said slowly.
"He says this is not the first time."
Victoria spun around.
"Don't you dare answer that."
Julian answered it.
What the building manager said next made three people in that room reach for their phones at the same time.
