Chapter 2: The Name Written on the Back

**— PART 2 —**
Arthur climbed the stairs slowly.
Maya and her brother followed a few steps behind, holding each other's hands.
The upstairs hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
Arthur stopped in front of the bedroom.
The drawer Victoria kept locked was small.
Ordinary looking.
He had never thought twice about it.
He pulled it open.
Inside was a single envelope.
No name on the front.
No date.
His hands weren't steady as he lifted it.
The photograph inside showed two babies.
Newborns.
Wrapped in hospital blankets.
And written on the back, in handwriting he didn't recognize — two names.
*Maya.
Daniel.*
Arthur's chest stopped moving.
He turned around slowly.
Maya was standing in the doorway.
Her eyes were already wet.
"You knew?" Arthur's voice came out barely above a whisper.
Maya shook her head.
"We only found it this morning.
We didn't understand.
We just…
we saw our names."
Arthur looked at the photograph again.
Then at the children.
Then back at the photograph.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Victoria.
*"Destroy that photo, Arthur.
You have no idea what you're getting involved in.
Those children are not what you think.
And neither is their mother."*
Arthur read it twice.
Then he looked up at Maya.
"Who brought you here?"
Maya hesitated.
"A woman.
She said she was an old friend of yours."
Arthur went completely still.
"What was her name?"
Maya swallowed hard.
"She said her name was Claire."
Arthur's face changed in a way the children had never seen before.
Claire had been d*ad for six years.
