Chapter 2: The Boy in the Garage

Henderson arrived in eight minutes.
Not ten.
He didn't knock.
He had a key — my father had given it to him years ago, back when he still believed Matthew was worth trusting with his daughter.
He took one look at me on the floor and his face went completely still.
"Mrs.
Hayes." His voice was careful.
Controlled.
"Can you stand?"
"I don't know."
He didn't ask again.
He simply helped me up.
My father was still on the line.
I could hear him breathing.
"She's up," Henderson said toward the phone.
"We need the medics now."
"They're in the lobby," my father said.
Then Henderson's radio crackled.
A voice I didn't expect.
"Tell her Matthew Hayes just walked into the building's private garage.
He's not alone."
I went cold.
"Who is he with?" Henderson asked.
A pause.
"A woman.
And — " Another pause.
Longer.
"Sir, there's a child with them.
A boy.
Maybe three years old."
The room tilted.
I heard my father go absolutely silent on the line.
Three years old.
The tiny blue sock.
I had found it eighteen months ago.
