Maya pressed her baby tighter against her chest.
Her cheek still burned.
Her legs were shaking.
But she didn't run.
She couldn't take her eyes off Colonel Vance.
He was still holding the medal.
Still staring at her face like he was seeing a ghost.
"Where did you get this?" he asked quietly.
"It was with me," Maya whispered.
"When they found me.
I was four years old.
It was the only thing I had."
Something in Vance's expression broke open.
He looked away.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes went red at the edges.
Victoria stepped forward.
"Colonel, I don't know what game this is—"
"Game?" He turned slowly.
"Victoria.
How long have you known?"
The room went ice cold.
Victoria's lips parted.
No words came out.
Her son — Maya's husband — finally lifted his head.
"Mom," he said carefully.
"What is he talking about?"
Victoria didn't answer.
She was staring at the medal in Vance's hand like it was something she had hoped to never see again.
"Twenty-four years ago," Vance said, his voice dropping low, "a little girl went missing the same night her father was buried."
He paused.
"Her father was my commanding officer."
The silence that followed was absolute.
Then Vance looked directly at Maya.
"I have been looking for you since the day you disappeared."
