Chapter 5: The Man Who Planned Everything

He walked in like he owned the building.

That was the only way Claire knew how to describe it afterward — the particular way Martin moved through a space, as if every room he entered had been arranged for his arrival.

He was tall, well-dressed, the kind of man who smiled with his whole face while his eyes stayed completely separate from the expression.

He stopped in the doorway of the birthday room and took in the scene in a single sweep.

Claire holding Lily.

Noah with the tablet.

Amanda seated, not meeting his eyes.

Evelyn standing apart, her arms at her sides.

His gaze landed on Lily's hair.

"What happened here?" he said.

His voice was pleasant.

Concerned.

The voice of a worried guardian.

"You know what happened," Claire said.

"I can see Lily is upset." He moved into the room, unhurried.

"Lily, come here, sweetheart."

Lily's grip on Claire's shirt tightened.

Martin noticed.

His smile didn't change.

"She's had a difficult afternoon," he said, addressing Claire as if she were a mildly unreasonable stranger.

"I think it's best if I take her home now.

Let her rest.

We can discuss whatever concerns you have through the proper channels — your attorney can contact mine on Monday."

"She's not going with you," Claire said.

The smile held.

"Claire.

The custody order is very clear.

Today is my day.

I'd hate for this to become a legal matter over what is clearly just—"

"I've already called Daniel Marsh."

The smile didn't disappear.

It recalibrated.

"Daniel." Martin said the name the way you say the name of someone you've been expecting to hear from.

"That's an interesting choice."

"We have the video, Martin."

He looked at the tablet in Noah's hands.

Then he looked at Noah.

Then he looked back at Claire.

"I don't know what video you're referring to," he said.

"Six days ago.

This room.

Lily in that chair." Claire kept her voice level.

"Amanda.

Evelyn.

And your instructions."

Martin turned to Evelyn.

Something passed between them — quick, invisible to anyone who wasn't watching for it.

"I gave no such instructions," he said.

Amanda stood up from her chair.

Martin looked at her.

Just looked.

And Amanda sat back down.

"This is a misunderstanding," Martin said, turning back to Claire.

"I'm sorry you're upset.

I'm sorry Lily is upset.

But I am her legal guardian, and I am taking her home."

He took one step toward Lily.

Claire didn't move.

He took another step.

Noah stood up.

Martin stopped.

He looked at Noah with the particular attention of a man assessing an obstacle.

"You're not part of this," he said.

"I'd be careful about inserting yourself into a legal custody situation."

"I'm the one holding the tablet," Noah said.

"With the video.

And the message.

And the timestamp."

Martin's jaw moved slightly.

"That device was obtained—"

"Voluntarily sent," Noah said.

"To my personal number.

By someone in this room."

Martin turned to Amanda.

This time the look was not a warning.

It was something colder.

"You have no idea," he said quietly, "what you've just done."

"I think I do," Amanda said.

Her voice was shaking, but she didn't look away.

"I think that's why I did it."

Martin straightened.

He looked around the room — at Claire, at Noah, at Amanda, at Evelyn who was now studying the floor — and Claire watched him do the calculation.

Watched him weigh what he had against what had just shifted.

Then he pulled out his phone.

"I'm calling my attorney," he said.

"Nobody leaves this room."

"Your attorney," Claire said, "is going to tell you the same thing Daniel already told me.

Someone from his office will be here in"— she checked the time — "six minutes."

Martin's thumb stopped on the screen.

Lily spoke for the first time since he'd walked in.

Small voice.

Clear.

"I don't want to go with you," she said.

Martin looked at her.

The smile was completely gone now.

"Lily—"

"I don't want to go with you," she said again.

Louder.

The glass door opened behind him.

A woman in a gray coat stepped into the room, a lanyard around her neck, a folder under her arm.

She was not from Daniel's office.

She was from child protective services.

Noah had made that call twenty minutes ago, just as Claire had asked.

May you like

Martin turned to face her.

And for the first time since he'd walked through the door, he had nothing ready to say.
