Chapter 2: The Song Only a Mother Knows

Part 2 👇
Rebecca's smile didn't vanish slowly.
It collapsed — all at once — like a mask ripped clean off her face.
Her eyes locked onto the woman standing in the doorway.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
For the first time in two years, Rebecca had nothing to say.
Julian looked between them, confused.
"Do you two know each other?"
Rebecca forced a short laugh.
"Of course not.
I've never seen this woman before in my life."
But her hands were shaking.
Lily had gone completely still in her wheelchair.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She was staring at the woman in the doorway with an expression no six-year-old should ever carry — something between terror and a feeling she had no words for yet.
The woman stepped forward slowly.
She didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
"Lily," she said softly.
"Do you remember the song?
The one I sang every night before you went to sleep?"
The room went silent.
Lily's small fingers tightened around the armrests.
Her lips began to move — barely a whisper — matching words no stranger could possibly know.
Julian took one step back.
"Who are you?"
The woman didn't answer him.
She was watching Rebecca.

And Rebecca was already reaching for her phone behind her back, thumb moving fast, like someone sending a very urgent message to someone who was supposed to make sure this never happened.
