Chapter 2: What the Camera Saw


The footage was eleven minutes long.
Ryan watched it on the officer's phone, standing in the hallway alone.
He didn't make a sound.
When he walked back into the room, Maya looked at his face and started to cry — not loudly, just quietly, the way someone cries when they already knew the truth but needed someone else to finally see it.
"Ryan." Evelyn's voice was steady.
"Whatever they think they found —"
"You went into his room." His voice was low.
Controlled.
"You opened the top drawer.
You took the inhaler out.
You put it in your bag."
Evelyn said nothing.
"Then you sat in your car for twenty-three minutes.
In our driveway.
And you waited."
The silence in the room was unbearable.
"She's a troubled young woman, Ryan.
She was always going to —"
"Stop." He held up one hand.
"Don't."
Maya pressed her fingers over her mouth.
Ryan turned toward the door.
Then he stopped.
Because standing in the doorway was the family attorney — the one Evelyn had called that morning.
And he was not looking at Maya.
He was looking at Evelyn.
With an expression Ryan had never seen on him before.
"Evelyn," the attorney said quietly.
"We need to talk.
Right now.
Alone."
