Chapter 2: The Voice That Came Out of the Speaker

**— PART 2 —**

The room went dead quiet.

Lauren's eyes locked onto that little pink watch like it was the only thing in the world.

Then she laughed — short and sharp, the kind of laugh that isn't really a laugh at all.

"She's eight years old," Lauren said.

"You're all going to believe an eight-year-old over me?"

Nobody answered her.

Emma still hadn't looked up.

She just pressed two fingers against the side of the watch — slowly, carefully — the way a child does when they've been practicing.

A voice came out of that tiny speaker.

Lauren's voice.

*"If you tell anyone what you saw, I will make sure your mother loses everything.

Do you understand me?

Everything."*

Emma's mom made a sound I can't describe.

The man standing beside Lauren — her own husband — took one step back from her.

Lauren's face didn't crumble.

It went hard.

"That recording means nothing," she said.

"I want a lawyer."

But then the door opened.

And the person who walked in was the last one any of us expected to see.
