Chapter 2: The Flushed Cheek and the Silence That Said Everything

Nolan took the stairs one at a time, not rushing, because some part of him understood that rushing would make it real.
The voice was coming from his daughter's room.
He pushed the door open.
His wife, Dana, spun around.
Behind her, their seven-year-old, Lily, sat on the edge of the bed with red eyes and a small hand pressed flat against her cheek.
"Nolan." Dana's voice was steady.
Too steady.
"You're home early."
He didn't answer her.
He looked at Lily.
"Sweetheart.
Come here."
Lily slid off the bed and crossed the room fast, wrapping both arms around his waist and pressing her face into his coat.
He felt her shoulders shaking.
"She was misbehaving," Dana said.
"I was handling it."
"Handling it." He repeated the words slowly, like he was testing their weight.
"She broke the vase in the hallway.
The one my mother gave us.
I told her there would be consequences."
Lily's grip on him tightened.
He crouched down and looked at his daughter's face.
Her cheek was flushed on one side in a way that had nothing to do with crying.
"Lily." He kept his voice low.
"How long has this been happening?"
She glanced once at Dana.
Then she looked back at him.
And she didn't say a word.
She just shook her head slowly, the way a child does when they have learned that speaking makes things worse.
