Chapter 2: # CHAPTER 2: Tires on the Gravel

Luca was already moving toward the door.
"Vanessa.
Where.
Is.
My.
Daughter."
It wasn't a question anymore.
Vanessa stepped back.
"She's sleeping, Luca.
I told you—"
"Then why is her suitcase in the garage?"
The entire room went still.
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I followed Luca into the hallway.
My hands were shaking.
I'd seen the suitcase.
I'd seen something else too — but I hadn't understood it until now.
A second bag.
A man's bag.
Dark leather.
Already loaded into the back seat.
"Mr.
Moretti," I said quietly.
"There was a man waiting near the side gate earlier.
I thought he was one of your guests."
Luca stopped walking.
He turned slowly.
"What did he look like?"
Before I could answer, Vanessa grabbed my arm — hard.
"Don't you dare," she whispered.
Luca saw it.
"Let go of her."
Vanessa released me.
But her eyes stayed locked on mine.
Cold.
Warning.
Teresa's voice drifted from the dining room behind us.
Weak.
Strained.
But clear enough for everyone to hear.
"Luca…
she planned this."
Forty guests heard it.
Vanessa heard it.
And somewhere outside, tires rolled slowly across the gravel.

What Hannah revealed next — and what Luca found in that car — is something no one in that room was prepared for.
