Chapter 2: The Document on the Desk

Charlotte didn't move.

She stayed on the floor, one hand pressed flat against the cold marble, and looked up at the woman standing over her.

The socialite's name was Vivienne Holt.

And she was smiling.

"Security!" Vivienne called out, waving two fingers like she was summoning a waiter.

"Remove this person immediately."

Two guards stepped forward.

Charlotte let them pull her to her feet.

She didn't resist.

Didn't cry.

Didn't say a single word.

That silence made Vivienne angrier than anything else could have.

"Nothing to say for yourself?" Vivienne stepped closer, lowering her voice so only Charlotte could hear.

"Your kind never does.

You sneak in, you cause a scene, and then you expect sympathy."

Charlotte looked at her steadily.

"I didn't sneak in," she said quietly.

"I used my key."

Vivienne laughed.

"Your key.

That's rich."

She turned to the watching crowd, arms open wide, performing for every person in that lobby.

"Someone call the police.

I want her charged."

That was the moment Charlotte reached into her jacket.

And placed a single document on the concierge desk.

The head of security glanced at it.

His face went pale.

He looked at Charlotte.

Then at Vivienne.

Then back at the paper.

"Ma'am," he said slowly, and he was no longer looking at Vivienne when he said it.

"I need to ask you to stop."

Vivienne froze.

"Excuse me?"
