Chapter 2: The Document She Never Meant to Show

Two crew members jumped in without hesitation.

Within seconds, Ellie and I were being lifted onto the dock.

Someone wrapped a blanket around her.

Someone else was already on a radio.

Mr.

Vale — Ethan — walked past Daniel without a single glance.

He crouched down in front of Ellie first.

Touched her face gently.

Then he looked at me, and something moved behind his eyes that I hadn't seen in five years.

"I should have come sooner," he said quietly.

"You came," I told him.

He stood slowly and turned around.

The entire deck had gone silent.

Lillian had stopped moving.

My mother's champagne glass was frozen halfway to her lips.

Daniel stepped forward, voice tight.

"Ethan.

I had no idea she was connected to you.

This was all a misunderstanding—"

"I watched the security feed on the flight over," Ethan said.

"All of it."

My father opened his mouth.

Ethan's attorney placed a hand on his arm — not a greeting.

A warning.

"Don't," the attorney said simply.

Then Ethan reached into his jacket and handed me a single folded document.

I recognized the letterhead immediately.

My mother saw it too.

The color left her face so fast I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

"Claire," Ethan said.

"It's time they knew everything."
