The officers walked in and the room went dead silent.
Adrian straightened his jacket like nothing had happened.
His mother folded her hands on the table.
Twenty people who had watched him swing that plate suddenly couldn't remember a thing.
I stood there with bl00d still drying in my hair and told the officer exactly what occurred.
"He str*ck me with a dinner plate.
These twenty people witnessed it."
Adrian's lawyer — who had apparently been seated at the table the entire time — leaned forward.
"My client's wife has a history of emotional episodes.
We're happy to cooperate fully."
I almost laughed.
Then one of the officers noticed the security camera above the doorway.
The room shifted.
Adrian's father stood up too fast.
His mother's composure finally cracked.
"That camera isn't active," she said quickly.
The officer looked at her.
"Ma'am, I didn't ask."
While Adrian was being questioned, Maya stayed close to me.
Her husband — Adrian's brother — kept staring at her from across the room.
Not with concern.
With warning.
She didn't look back at him once.
I closed my fingers around the flash drive in my pocket.
Whatever was on it, this family had just shown me they would do anything to get it back.
And I was only beginning to understand why.
